You’ve probably heard combining black and brown is “against the rules” from your mother, grandmother, or another trusted source throughout your life. It’s usually coupled with traditional warnings against pairing black and navy or pink and red, as well as outdated fashion declarations that your shoes and bag should match, sequins are only for evening wear, and that old Coco Chanel saying about taking off one accessory before leaving the house.

In other words, it’s a well-established part of a style rulebook passed down through generations. However, the passage of time, trends, and the most stylish women of our current era have shown us that it’s just a myth.

On the spring—summer 2026 catwalks, brands like Acne Studios, Boss, Celine, Hermès, and Ottolinger invite us to give these “mistakes” a chance, while street style experts demonstrate that harmonizing brown and black is not nearly as crazy as it may seem. What’s more, if you have any doubts, leopard print, certain cow prints, and the Fendi’s monogram “Zucca” print are constant proof that mixing deep and dark neutrals is always a powerful combination.

Look #1. Based on basics

Experimenting with new combinations can be a little daunting, but starting with familiar, everyday pieces can help ease the nerves. A black t-shirt with a blazer and a brown belt make for the perfect winter outfit, while a brown suede coat and black turtleneck can be worn through spring with denim shorts.
