Obviously, Gwyneth Paltrow has that whole Mary Poppins “practically perfect in every way” thing going on, but don’t think that means she hasn’t had a struggle or two. Recently, she said that becoming a step-parent to her two stepchildren has been one of her “biggest learnings as a human being.”

Paltrow shares two children of her own—Apple and Moses—with her ex-husband Chris Martin, and is stepmother to her husband Brad Falchuk’s two kids, Brody and Isabella. At the Visionary Women’s International Women’s Day Summit on March 6, Paltrow explained how developing a good relationship with her step-kids required a bit of a learning curve.

“My area of growth personally came from the initial difficult relationship I had with my step-kids and now they’re like my kids,” she said, per People, but “the path to here was really rough.” Paltrow continued, “It’s almost like you have to embody the spirit of the sun and just give and not expect anything back. I just learned to try to just keep shining like the sun and never keeping score.”

Back in August 2023, Paltrow said in an Instagram Q&A that trying not to be seen as the “evil stepmother” felt like stepping on landmines. “You’re going into a family with dynamics. And there’s all kinds of fear around loss and what does this person mean?” she said. “But for myself, the minute I decided, and fully embodied the idea that my step-kids were my kids and I love them just as much and I gave them the same rules and boundaries, and just kind of whole-heartedly went for it, then the easier the whole thing got. And now it’s pretty great.”

In fairness to Falchuk’s kids, I can’t imagine trying to adjust to Gwyneth Paltrow as my stepmother either.
