Every season, Uniqlo U—the affordable sub-label designed by elite pants-whisperers Christophe Lemaire and Sarah-Linh Tran—remains a bastion of quiet consistency. This spring, though, the wily French designers have a novel proposition for the rising temperatures: even more clothes. If you’re sweating at the mere prospect, hear them out for a moment—I promise it’ll make sense soon enough.
Because crucial to that proposition is one of the most important style hacks in all of menswear: layering. It’s so important, in fact, that Uniqlo U’s spring-summer 2025 collection is quite literally entitled ‘Layers of Spring’, and the entire assortment is dedicated to helping you pull them off. I’m well aware there are only so many times I can say that Uniqlo U really nails the easy-wearing essentials…but Uniqlo U really nails the easy-wearing essentials—and this season is about throwing on as many of ’em as possible, preferably all at once.
As per usual, the latest drop manages to imbue the Japanese retailer’s no-frills basics with Lemaire’s subtle Parisian elegance, in an eminently wearable marriage of form and function. This time around, the dynamic design duo swapped the thick wool knits for lightweight cotton tees, and the saturated jewel tones of fall for blinding whites, crisp blues, and almost-industrial grays, a lightness reflected in both styling and sensibility.
Which brings us back to my original point, vis-à-vis spring layering. It might seem strange to suggest wearing even more during the warmer months of the year, but when you consider the utter unpredictability of the weather these days it makes a lot of sense. (The voluminous hooded blouson, for example, will have your back during those unexpected April showers, while the UV-protecting bucket hat will protect your face when the sun shows up that same afternoon.)
It helps, of course, that all of these mix-and-match upgrades can be, uh, mixed and matched throughout the season—or the course of a single day—to mirror your weather app’s confused-face emoji. I cherry-picked some of my favorite pieces here, but head over to Uniqlo to browse the assortment in its entirety.
