Just when you thought Kamala Harris’s VP pick couldn’t get any more likable, it turns out Tim Walz’s wife, Gwen Walz, is a teacher just like her husband and another famous former second lady, Jill Biden.
According to the official Minnesota Governor’s website, Gwen Walz has taught in public, alternative, and migrant schools, and is an advocate for education reform in the nation’s prisons. “She has worked across the country to bring educational opportunities to incarcerated women and men, or as Gwen notes: students,” the bio page notes. In fact, in addition to education, prison reform appears to be another one of Gwen’s passion projects. Per CNN, her first public event after her husband became governor of Minnesota was a rally to restore voting rights to convicted felons.
Gwen grew up in Minnesota, according to her bio, where her parents were small business owners. She began her teaching career in Nebraska, which is where she met Tim. The Walzes were married in 1994, and they now have two children, teenagers Hope and Gus, per People.
After Tim Walz took office in 2019, his wife Gwen Walz told Twin Cities PBS, “I make no mistake about it, Tim is going to make the decisions. And he did when he was in Congress. And I think we worked toward usually the same end, but we really trust one another.”
