Ready to make that shift for yourself? Read on for how to get the Winona pixie haircut.
What is the Winona pixie?
As we said, it’s a little longer than the traditional pixie, with bangs and an off-center part. “What I’ve always adored about Winona’s pixie is that it’s equal parts cool girl and classic Hollywood,” Beau Dieda, a celebrity hairstylist and SRI Labs consultant, tells Glamour. “There’s this effortless edge to it that somehow also feels incredibly soft and feminine. It’s not trying too hard, and that’s exactly why it works. Trends come and go, but confidence? That’s eternal—and this cut is dripping in it.”
How to ask for a Winona pixie at the salon
To get the shape that’s right for you, work closely with your stylist to capture the mood you want in a way that works with your face.
“A successful pixie cut depends heavily on the stylist’s technical experience; many new stylists are intimidated by short haircuts,” says Jay Bulluck, owner of Local Honey salon in Greensboro, North Carolina. “Research before heading to the salon is critical. Don’t be afraid to ask your stylist if they’re comfortable bringing the Winona look to life. If you’re visiting a salon for the first time, ask their front desks specifically for stylists with expertise in short, precision cutting.”
Hodge says a good stylist will look at more than just the photo. “They should be looking at hair texture, growth patterns, density, bone structure, and how the hair naturally moves,” the expert explains. “A pixie is very personal. The same haircut can look completely different from one person to the next.”
Dieda agrees, adding, “Ask for a soft, textured pixie with movement through the crown and a little length on top so you have something to play with. The magic word is lived-in. You don’t want it too cropped or too severe—you want it to look like you woke up like this, even if it took 10 minutes to style. And please, find a stylist who will actually look at your face shape and texture before they start cutting. This is not a one-size-fits-all situation.”
