Big news for anyone into outerwear: by some blessed occurance of Black Friday-related miraculousness, the Barbour jacket that inspired a generation of imitators is on sale. We’re talking, of course, about the Barbour Bedale, one of the most iconic pieces of outerwear this side of the trench coat. Right this very second, the Bedale is available for 20% off its original price over at Backcountry.com, which knocks a decent $80-ish off a jacket you’ll be wearing for years—maybe decades—to come.
Sure, you’ll need an account at Backcountry to access the deal—the discount won’t even show up until it’s in your cart—but creating one requires approximately three seconds (literal, not metaphorical) and, again, the Bedale is the kind of jacket destined for heirloom status, which seems like good ROI, even in the context of my utter lack of practical investment expertise.
If this particular Barbour jacket doesn’t ring any bells, here’s the low-down. Barbour, which has specialized in outerwear since 1894, first started making the Bedale in 1980 as a lighter-weight, shorter-length layer primarily intended for horseback riding in inclement weather. Soon enough, though, the Bedale’s waxed cotton exterior, corduroy collar, zipper-front, and massive bellows pockets caught on with the city crowd, too, making it an immediate hit for the British heritage label.
Four decades later, the Bedale is as sharp, tough, and technically proficient as ever. The fit is roomy enough to layer beneath without adding extra bulk; the construction is tough as nails; and the waxed cotton does an impossibly good job at keeping you dry, sans a single PFA in the mix. (Even the re-waxing process can be sort of meditative, if you learn how to do it properly.)
And while it’s true that as Cyber Week ramps up with gusto, you’re going to see far more eye-popping discounts on everything you care to name, few of them can deliver even half the value a full-price Bedale can—which means one that’s 20% off is practically unbeatable.

Black Friday is technically the Friday after Thanksgiving, which means that it starts and ends on December 29th. But Black Friday deals are no longer confined to that single day, or even that weekend. To wit: the Backcountry sale kicked off this week, but it’ll run all the way through Cyber Monday.
Cyber Monday traditionally happens the Monday after Black Friday. (That’s December 2nd, for those keeping track at home.) That doesn’t mean stores will wait until then to launch their sales, but if one of your preferred retailers hasn’t gotten active by Black Friday, it’s worth checking in after the weekend.
