The Best Shampoo for Men with Oily Hair
Our Experience
On my oiliest days, this purifying and balancing shampoo has allowed my strands to preserve their natural shine while also tempering oil at the scalp. So, I flush away the excess grime without compromising the necessary moisture levels. In terms of “having a good hair day”, that means my hair starts and ends the day with the same body, volume, and liveliness, as opposed to looking too limp, too oily, too dry, or too anything else by noontime.
The Best Bald Head Shampoo for Men
Our Experience
I have to yield to my brother Sam on this one, who is my tester of all things targeting bald heads. MANTL’s pH-balanced cleanser is his preferred way to combine scalp cleansing and facial cleansing in one fell swoop. Sam feels like he has the most “presentable head” when he uses MANTL, especially after a fresh head shave when it’s imperative to calm any inflammation. While I’m an endorser of using regular shampoo on bald heads (to temper oil levels and such), MANTL is one of the few products (and brands, at that) which effectively streamlines things for men. The Best Anti-Dandruff Shampoo for Men
What the Expert Says
According to Dr. Green, the pyrithione zinc 2% works to “normalize sebum production and eliminate any bacteria or fungus causing flaking and irritation on the scalp.” Green appreciates that this recipe is less parching than most anti-dandruff shampoos for men. “Vanicream’s shampoo is very mild and very gentle on the scalp, as its formulation is free of fragrance, parabens, formaldehyde, and sulfates,” she explains.
The Best Curly Hair Shampoo for Men
What the Expert Says
Since I don’t have curly hair (nor does my partner, who is my testing guinea pig), I threw this question to a pro I trust with everything: Darius Davie, men’s hairstylist and creative director of Groom Guy. “One of the major reasons I stand by Curlsmith’s shampoo is its ability to act as both a cleanser and moisturizer, with heavy duty chemical agents that leaves the hair smelling great,” says Davie.
The Best Coily Hair Shampoo for Men
What the Expert Says
Here’s another pick from Davie. “This shampoo is a first-class ticket to refreshment paradise,” says Davie. “Coily hair is very prone to dry scalp and dandruff. You need a shampoo like Frederick Benjamin’s that can settle into the scalp and provide great texture. I encourage people to leave this particular shampoo on hair, with intent to reach the scalp, for a couple minutes before rinsing out allowing those oils to retrieve full coverage. The longer you keep it in and evenly massage into the head the better chances the scalp is stimulated for healthier growth.”
The Best Straight Hair Shampoo for Men
Our Experience
This is one of the few shampoos that my partner and I will share—me for my extremely thick but straight hair whenever it’s grown out a few inches or more, and him for his fine hair at any length. It gives me just the right amount of movement, texture, and definition so that my hair doesn’t look limp or feel unstylable. I tend to cut back on the amount of conditioner I use afterwards too, since I like the style-ready results of the standalone shampoo. (That’s not a green light to stop using conditioner, but rather, to change your cadence on the days you shampoo.) Living Proof is also one of the best brands for finding a product that works with any hair type, not just this “Full” line that promises volume and texture.
The Best Shampoo for Men with Thin Hair
Our Experience
Here is an all-time favorite of my fine-haired partner, who demands a shampoo that fights gravity and gives his hairs extra height and fullness. OUAI’s formula here has the ability to deeply rinse without causing any frizzing or fraying, unlike many shampoos that give volume by virtue of parching the hairs. So with OUAI, you get volume, density, and body, plus mega moisture to top it off.
Best Shampoo for Men with Thick Hair
Our Experience
If this article was called “Adam Hurly’s Favorite Shampoo of All Time”, then Davines’ LOVE shampoo would be in the first spot. But my needs do not match every reader’s needs, so this product will have to settle for “Best Thick Hair Shampoo” in the meantime. It is so difficult to find a product that tames my thick hair while it cleanses. The entire LOVE line is like a relaxer for my untenable and rigid-straight strands, and becomes even more essential whenever I decide to grow my hair out. If you have coarse or thick hair—and especially if it’s on the straighter side—then this shampoo (and LOVE assortment) is a game changer.
Best Shampoo for Men with Thinning Hair
Our Experience
I don’t put a lot of investment into shampoo as a hair loss solution. (Since it doesn’t sit on the scalp long enough to absorb the active ingredients which fight those follicle-compromising hormonal agents.) Instead, I value a cleansing product that supplements all the other hair retention efforts, like Nioxin’s System 2 shampoo: It gives your scalp instant stimulation thanks to peppermint oil (and can boost circulation at the follicles), as well as salicylic acid which can help create a harmonious (oil-balanced, flake-free) environment for the follicle farm. It’s frequently endorsed by the dermatologists and hair transplant surgeons I trust most, and I find that it doesn’t overpromise or mislead customers in terms of its potential.
The Best Solid Shampoo for Men
Our Experience
I find most shampoo bars feel like a solution for getting around TSA’s liquid regulations while flying, as opposed to actually great shampoos. But along comes Church, one of the US’s best barbershops and maker of some A+ hair stylers, with their first hair care product (as well as a conditioning bar to match it). I don’t know if there’s a liquid shampoo that can go toe to toe with Church’s bar shampoo in terms of fortifying and conditioning ingredients. I’d go so far as to call it a co-wash for this fact, not to mention, it will also outlast any liquid shampoo that you buy, too—assuming you don’t store it in a pool of water.
