While Kate Middleton described Prince William as a “great source of comfort” amid her ongoing health battles, she announced her cancer diagnosis to the world without her husband by her side.

According to a “palace source” that recently spoke with People, this was a deliberate choice made by the Princess of Wales. “It is a message from the princess about her health, and she wanted to personally deliver the message on her own,” the source said. This aligns with a previous report that the princess took full control over her announcement, choosing to write “every word herself.”

Meanwhile, the source says Prince William is “focused on ensuring his wife has the privacy she needs to fully recover and that his children are shielded from the understandable interest in the news that has been shared.” According to People’s source, “William is extremely proud of his wife for the courage and strength she has shown not just this week but since her surgery in January.”

On March 22, following months of speculation and conspiracy theories, Kate Middleton explained her recent absence from the public eye with a personal video message. “In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London, and at the time it was thought that my condition was noncancerous. The surgery was successful; however, tests after the operation found cancer had been present,” she said. “My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy, and I’m now in the early stages of that treatment.”

Understandably, Middleton needed to process the “shock” of her diagnosis before sharing the news publicly. “It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment,” she said. “But most importantly it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte, and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them and to reassure them that I’m going to be OK.”
