As Don Draper on Mad Men, Jon Hamm played a major role in remaking menswear in the late aughts and early 2010s. By the time the show premiered in 2007, tie and lapel widths were already shrinking—thanks to the efforts of designers like then-Dior Homme boss Hedi Slimane—but the AMC series accelerated the process, turning slim-cut, ’60s-era tailoring into the be-all and end-all of sartorial cool. Now, in 2024, Hamm is proving once again that when it comes to style, you can never go wrong sticking with the classics.
Leaving LA’s legendary Chateau Marmont last night with his wife, the actress Anna Osceola, Hamm sported a series of trend-proof casual staples: a camel topcoat, wide-leg selvedge jeans, a navy ribbed shawl collar cardigan over a clean white button-up, and a pair of rugged, beat-to-hell work boots. All of these garments are things that GQ would’ve recommended to you as readily in 1964, 1994, and 2014 as we would right now. And it doesn’t matter that there are a couple slightly anachronistic moves here—the coat maybe isn’t as long and flowy as we’d prefer these days; the jean cuffs are a smidge big for our liking—because taken together the result is a look that’s as a timelessly handsome as Jon Hamm himself.
We’re not just completely talking out of our asses when we advise you to invest in time-tested essentials. Hamm’s outfit here is a great reminder that trends will come and go, silhouettes will skinny up and widen out, but if you’ve built a wardrobe with a strong foundation you’ll never have to worry about looking out of style.
