Ben Affleck Looking Miserable isn’t just a meme‚ apparently it’s a problem. Jennifer Lopez, who recently filed to divorce the Oscar winner, reportedly tried to help him overcome his chronic Eeyore-ness, but the man with Resting Sourpuss Face just couldn’t get happy enough for her.

Lopez “did spend a lot of time making sure Ben was happy and had everything he needed,” a source from Lopez’s camp told People, adding, “The way she cared for him was almost childlike…Friends constantly reminded her that she’s not responsible for his feelings. He’s very moody and dark at times. Jennifer appreciates life in another way. She’s very grateful for everything.”

Another source, reportedly close to Affleck’s ex-wife Jennifer Garner, told the outlet that Affleck “has never handled stress well.”

“He doesn’t have good coping skills. He gets easily frustrated and tends to be moody. When he’s relaxed and in a good mood, it’s amazing to be around him. But more often, he’s upset or frustrated,” the insider continued. “Many times, it’s just something small that he gets stuck on. He really doesn’t understand how his bad mood affects people around him. It’s just not fun being around that kind of negativity.”

For his part, Affleck is staying mum, though he has addressed his crabby reputation over the years. “Listen, I have a very unhappy-looking resting face,” he told Jimmy Kimmel, per Today. “That’s how God made me! You don’t have to punish me for it.” He also told Kevin Hart that he’s a “little bit shy” and doesn’t like “a lot of attention.”

“People see me and they’re like, ‘Why is this dude always mad?’ Because somebody has their camera sticking in my face. And I’m like, ‘OK, here we go,’” he said. Publicity puts him in a bad headspace? I don’t think Jennifer Lopez actually did much to prevent that. But if he was moody behind the scenes, well, that sucks and I get why she’d want out.
