Is the sexiest place to sex a stairwell? According to some of the horniest TV shows of the past year, the answer is yes.
In the latest season of Bridgerton, for example, the first sex scene between our leads, Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha) and Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Newton), takes place as the two are passing one another on the servants’ stairwell. He’s coming down the stairs, she’s going up, and the two lock eyes. After three episodes’ worth of buildup, their sexual tension is simply too much to bear, and the couple can’t help but go at it right then and there. The heaving breathing, the lifted petticoats, the licked fingers—this scene is immediately going down (he-he) in the Sex Scene Hall of Fame, taking its rightful place alongside the stairwell scene in The Summer I Turned Pretty and the stairwell scene in Heated Rivalry.
You might ask, what makes the stairwell so damn sexy? After rewatching these scenes several times for my job and for no other reason, I believe I’ve come up with the answer: Stairwells are hot because they’re transitional spaces, not destinations. When two people are going at it on the stairs, it’s because their lust was simply too intense to be contained. They didn’t want to—or rather, couldn’t—wait to reach the bedroom before throwing themselves at one another. The sexual tension breaks like a tsunami crashing on the shore, all that potential energy finally realized into something beyond containment. It is pure, unadulterated lust, and it is sexy as hell.
(Also, from a physical standpoint, stairs allow people to get creative with angles. Just gonna leave that here.)
