If you’ve ever wondered how to get longer lashes, the secret is a lot more multifaceted than you might expect. While there are lash growth serums, lengthening mascaras, and even professional lash extensions, knowing when and how to use each of these methods is what will actually make a difference. “Just like with the hair on our heads, the foundation for long, healthy lashes begins with proper care and consistency,” says Dendy Engelman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. This means that while one or more of these options can help give you healthy lashes, maintaining a routine is essential.
Below, we spoke with dermatologists and lash experts for advice on stimulating lash growth, the right at-home products and techniques, plus insight into lash extensions for a more permanent solution.
What is the eyelash growth cycle?
Lashes grow in cycles that last about one to three months. The follicle first actively grows for around 30 days in the anagen phase. After it’s fully grown, it begins to slowly remove itself from the blood supply over a span of a few weeks, known as the catagen phase. It’ll eventually be pushed out by a new follicle underneath in the telogen phase, and the process repeats itself.
How long does it take to grow lashes?
If you’re using a lash serum, it can take up to eight to twelve weeks to see full results. If you’re getting lash extensions, the results are instant, and last through your natural lash cycle, so fills are recommended every two and a half to three weeks to keep them looking full, according to Amanda Robinson, an eyelash expert and owner of Iris+West Lash Co.
How can you make your eyelashes grow longer and thicker?
If you struggle with thinning lashes, there are a few ways to make them grow longer and thicker. “Lashes thrive when the follicle is supported and protected. It’s not just about growing longer lashes, it’s also about keeping them rooted in the follicle and preventing premature shedding,” says Dr. Engelman. To do this, it’s about using the right products (which we’ll get into more later), gently removing eye makeup, and avoiding excessive rubbing or tugging. “Keeping the lash line healthy is key to maximizing your natural lash potential,” she adds.
Use a lash growth serum
An eyelash serum can nourish, strengthen, and elongate your lashes. After consistent use (usually around eight to twelve weeks), you’ll start to notice thicker, longer lashes and new growth. Look for these hero ingredients in your serums:
- Peptides: Amino acids help nourish existing lashes and activate keratin production to make lashes stronger, bouncier, and more resilient.
- Biotin: Vitamin B7 supports keratin and proteins in the follicle; it promotes new lash growth and can help decrease lash loss.
- Prostaglandin: A lipid that acts as a hormone and encourages the lashes to enter the anagen (or growth) phase and helps prolong this phase. Just keep in mind that it’s not pregnancy-safe, and some users see side effects like eye darkening, so consult with your dermatologist or ophthalmologist.
