The comic book-style artwork of Joshua Vides has a temporary home in Petersen Automative Museum in his hometown of Los Angeles.
For view until July 7 is Vides’ “Flat Out” exhibition, which blurs the lines between reality and illustration, showing the artist’s work embody monochromatic vehicles, tires, gas pumps and a life-sized auto body shop.
“I’ve had the opportunity to paint numerous vehicles and create galleries before, but to bring ‘Reality to Idea’ to life in a gallery at the Petersen is a dream come true,” stated Vides, per Hemmings. “Every vehicle provides a unique canvas, as do the spaces they are set in. Doing this at the Petersen was such an honor, and I am excited for the public to experience this exhibition.”
Vides sketches were actualized through his “Reality to Idea” concept, where he strips down everyday items to their original form through illustration. The artist and his team handpainted pieces in nine days, culminating in an exhibition that homages the automotive industry, and legendary sports cars like the Porsche 944 and Ferrari 512 B.
“What Joshua Vides has done by transforming this gallery into a real-life sketchbook is truly remarkable,” stated Terry L. Karges, executive director of the Petersen Automotive Museum. “Utilizing the canvas of multiple unique automobiles, he has created a space unlike anything we’ve ever had at the Petersen, which will provide inspiration for our guests.”
