The duality of sneaker culture is real. The casuals love that you can walk in and get a Jordan 1 ‘Royal’ off the shelf. Sneaker Twitter and PJ Tucker are triggered that they’re still sitting. Non-debatable, the ‘Royal’ 1 is iconic. It’s rumored to be MJ’s favorite colorway of the Jordan 1, even though he never wore them on court—only for recreational purposes.

But here’s some history. Kids, pay attention. What about the skate history? Lance Mountain and The Search for Animal Chin? 1987, the Powell Peralta crew were wearing them to skate in. I don’t know how to kickflip, but you learn a few things when you have Tony Hawk and Koston on the number one sneaker show in the world. That same year, 1987, Slash from Guns N’ Roses wears it with leather pants. Leather pants? You gotta f***ing fit off. You know who else did it? 2013, JLP on En Noir era. I have the proof. 2017, they were reselling for over $500. People were waiting in line.

But that was 10 years ago. A lot could change in 10 years. When’s the last time you saw a fidget spinner? The 2026 version, some say that not having the ’85 cut hurt them. The 2023 suede model? Not great. Listen, Nike CEO Elliot Hill claims he’s gonna solve for this problem. Starting in 2027, you’re gonna see less Jordan Retros. Maybe you’ll miss them when they’re gone. You know how this goes. Complain if they sell out, talk shit if they don’t. It’s the sneakerhead circle of life.

I say if you want them, block out the noise, restore the feeling of going to the sneaker store, picking a classic off the shelf with no hassle. If not, skip them. But an icon is an icon, no matter what your timeline or your algorithm is saying.
