Cowgirl nail designs are not totally new—Americana has been having a moment. The past few years have given us Cowboy Carter, Dolly Parton collabs, Chappell Roan’s pink pony club, and Sabrina Carpenter in a bedazzled cowgirl hat.
Likewise, in fashion, bandanas, plaid shirts, prairie skirts, and Western boots have been busy infiltrating our wardrobes. And, while country music and Western style has always been popular, particularly amongst the southern states, the recent spotlight has renewed and expanded its fan base.
One way to pay homage is through cowgirl nails: We’ve seen an explosion in cowgirl-themed nail designs, with a kitsch mix of cow print, flames, flags, stars, and stripes. In fact, recent Google searches have seen attention spike around “cowgirl nail designs” heading into summer 2026.
What are cowgirl nails?
“The Western trend is gaining huge traction for summer, thanks to a shift in popular culture towards the country aesthetic and sound,” says Tinu Bello, an expert manicurist and senior ambassador at Mylee. “This is now being reflected in our manicures. The key things that make a cowgirl mani are the tones, the texture, the embellishment, and the nail art.”
She continues, “The color palette is the easiest way to adopt this trend. Typically you should look for earthy tones. Brown, tan, beige, and terra-cotta mimic the desert and prairie landscapes. However, we are seeing a more modern take on cowgirlcore this year. Blue and green represent denim and the open skies or greenery of the south. Gold and silver metallic tones can also be used to evoke the look of belt buckles, spurs, and other metallic accessories. For a patriotic look, try red, white, and blue to emulate the stars and stripes, or try pinks for a true Dollywood style mani.”
How to create cowgirl nails yourself?
“The easiest way to rock the trend is with a hint of cow print. This can either be an accent on all nails, or allover one nail. This is pretty simple to re-create at home,” says Tinu. Here’s the expert’s take on how to DIY the look:
- Prep: Start by preparing your nails, shaping them, and applying a base coat.
- Base: Next, apply two coats of white nail polish, letting each layer dry completely.
- Dot: Using a dotting tool dipped in black nail polish, create irregular, randomly placed spots of varying sizes on each nail.
- Seal: Allow the spots to dry thoroughly, then apply a top coat to seal the design and add shine.
- Tidy: Finally, clean up any excess polish around the nails with a brush or cotton bud dipped in nail polish remover.
How to wear cowgirl nail designs?
The good news is there are a lot of different ways to tap into the trend, depending on your style and how hard you want to go. You can take elements and go minimal with them, but the aesthetic lends itself perfectly to maximalism. “Design and pattern are king here,” says Bello. “You are going to want to adorn your nails with fun drawings or decals. In addition to cow print, try paisley and bandana patterns, cactus and desert scenes, snakes and flames, or my favorites: cowboy boots and Stetson hats.”
