Into every generation is born a slayer, but it looks like we’re not going to meet this one. Sarah Michelle Geller just announced Hulu is no longer moving forward with the Buffy the Vampire reboot, Buffy: New Sunnydale.

“So, I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me,” the 48-year-old said in an Instagram video on March 14. “Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale.

Geller, of course, starred as the original teenage vampire and demon hunter in Buffy the Vampire Slayer from 1997 to 2003, while also appearing in a couple of episodes of its spinoff, Angel. She was set to reprise her role as Buffy Summers in the reboot while serving as an executive producer.

“I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots,” she said in her video after thanking the project’s would-be director Chloé Zhao. “Thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her, and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that.”

Gellar closed her candid message, stating, “And I promise, if the apocalypse actually comes, you could still beep me.” Does that mean Buffy would have still carried a pager 26 years later? We have been so robbed!

Here’s everything we knew about the project before it fell through—and what might happen ext.

Who was making the Buffy reboot?

On February 3, Deadline announced that a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot was in the works from director Chloé Zhao, written by Poker Face creators Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. It would feature Gellar reprising her role as Buffy Summers, and all four women are executive-producing, alongside OG BTVS producers Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton. Yes, Dolly Parton was also a producer on the original.

But just as important as who was on the team is who was left off it: Joss Whedon. Whedon created the character for the 1992 Buffy movie starring Kristy Swanson, then created the show and its spin-off, Angel, before going on to even greater success with films like The Avengers. However, he has since found himself in major controversy after, among other allegations, his mistreatment of the Justice League cast and stories of toxicity from the Buffy set.
