If your back tends to protest against most traditional mattresses, you’ll want to check out the DreamCloud Hybrid. This hybrid mattress contains individually wrapped springs and several layers of foam for a firm yet forgiving resting spot. The memory foam layer contours to the body and provides pressure relief on the joints, while a denser foam layer provides extra structure. Testers loved that the mattress, with its high level of responsiveness, is easy to move around in, yet isn’t so responsive that the bed shakes when you shift. It also avoids that “sinking in” feeling, so it’s easy to get in and out of bed. Note that some reviewers say that the DreamCloud’s support can wane over time and may begin to sag in its center. Others say its edge support is lacking.
You shouldn’t judge a mattress by its cover, but in this case, you can—its mattress cover, that is. The DreamCloud is encased in a durable cashmere blend pillow top that does its name justice. It feels soft, luxurious, and durable, with a breathable weave that helps wick moisture and heat away. The mere fact that this mattress brand is called “Plank” may be enough to win over any firm mattress lover. Even better, the mattress is reversible, which means it’s possible to choose between two levels of firmness: Firm and Ultra-Firm. We found that the Firm level has a moderately dense feel, offset by its plush quilted top, while the Ultra-Firm side is one of the firmest bed surfaces we’ve tried. The mattress also feels breathable, which makes it a great pick for hot sleepers.
One of our favorite things about the Plank Luxe is its unwavering edge support. It’s so strong, in fact, that one of our testers says “I feel like I could tie my shoe on this bed comfortably.” Because experts typically recommend that back and stomach sleepers pick firm mattresses, the Plank Luxe may be especially valuable to people who sleep in those positions. It may be too firm for side sleepers, especially on its Ultra-Firm side.

Our Tester’s Take
The Dawn is one of Helix’s firmest mattresses with stainless steel springs and a mix of soft and durable foam. This offers ideal support for stomach sleepers, who, according to Wulke, need a firm mattress. Without enough support, stomach sleepers may find that the front part of their body sinks into the mattress.
The mattress’s “comfort” layers include an ergonomic foam topper (which feels like a latex cover), and cradling foam at the center to contour your body. It also has supportive layers made of a tougher foam base and reinforced edges to minimize motion transfer. In testing, we found that the mattress helped keep stomach sleepers’ hips elevated, which is key for maintaining proper positioning in the spine, as GQ previously reported. Testers also commented on how responsive and “bouncy” the Helix Dawn felt, which is helpful for changing positions at night, as well as getting out of bed.
