Frequently asked questions
Does facial firming cream really work?
Facial firming creams really do work, thanks to ingredients like peptides, retinoids, and humectants. Peptides “can nudge your skin to make more collagen over time,” says Mollie Kelly Tufman, MD, and founder of the Beauty Lab. While retinoids remain the MVPs for thickening the dermis and boosting elasticity. “Also, don’t underestimate humectants like hyaluronic acid or glycerin. They pull in water and give your skin that juicy, plumped-up look, sort of like inflating a balloon just enough to smooth out the wrinkles.”
While creams can’t reach as deep as in-office treatments like microneedling or radiofrequency, they’re still essential for keeping skin hydrated, plump, and resilient over time.
What causes sagging skin?
According to Kseniya Kobets, MD, director of cosmetic dermatology at Montefiore Einstein Advanced Care, sagging skin is due to a loss of collagen and elastin. “When underlying fat shrinks or shifts, supporting ligaments loosen, and bone changes, so the skin sits over a different foundation,” she says. There are a ton of reasons why this happens—Dr. Kobets says it likely has to do with genetics, sun exposure, smoking and hormonal or weight loss changes.
What’s the fastest way to tighten sagging face skin?
Moisturizing gives the quickest temporary improvement when dehydration is the issue, Dr. Kobets adds. “True skin tightening generally develops over weeks to months with in-office procedures,” she says. It’s important to determine what’s causing your skin sagging when determining how to address it: dehydration, laxity, volume loss or a combination of all might require a variety of over-the-counter and in-office solutions.
What do dermatologists recommend for sagging skin?
In addition to using a facial firming cream, Dr. Kobets says applying sunscreen, a retinol, and vitamin C and peptides can make all the difference. “Beyond skincare, we may consider fillers and collagen-stimulating volumizers for volume loss, lasers—including resurfacing lasers—for skin quality, microneedling or radiofrequency microneedling, and ultrasound or radiofrequency tightening devices for appropriate laxity,” she adds.
How we evaluated the best face firming creams
Testers applied the creams consistently—morning or night, depending on the product—for several weeks, paying attention to hydration, skin texture, firmness, and overall appearance of fine lines and sagging. The ones we tested featured ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, niacinamide and retinol to soften skin texture and plump and add glow to skin. We also considered factors like absorption, layering with other skin care or makeup, and scent. The best skin firming creams struck the balance between hydration and making our skin look bouncy and texture-free, without freezing our face.
