The fashion world is mourning the loss of designer Valentino Garavani, who died on Monday, January 19, at 93. In the hours since his death, several artists have taken to social media to express their condolences to Valentino — who designed mononymously under his first name — including Grammy-winning singer and songwriter Céline Dion.
In an extended post on X (formerly Twitter), the “My Heart Will Go On” singer penned a tribute to Valentino, with whom she often collaborated for some of her most memorable looks.
“To my dear Valentino, from the very beginning, you always saw me for who I truly am,” she wrote. “Your designs were never just gowns…they were emotion, confidence, and delicate beauty brought to life. Over the years, our friendship was one I cherished deeply.”
In addition to her strong vocals and power ballads, Dion is also known for her sense of fashion, often planning multiple outfits for award shows and events. Valentino was one of her go-to designers, and she credited him for empowering her throughout her career.
“You made me feel strong, graceful, and truly myself every time I stepped into one of your creations,” Dion continued. “That is a gift only a true artist can give. Thank you for your vision, your generosity, and for sharing your extraordinary haute couture with the world. Your legacy will live on in every silhouette, every stitch, and in countless unforgettable moments.”
Valentino reportedly died of natural causes. He is reported to have been in his home, surrounded by loved ones at the time of his death. At the time of writing, Valentino is lying in state at Piazza Mignanelli 23 through Thursday, January 22. Valentino’s funeral will take place on Friday, January 23, at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and of the Martyrs.
