Obviously, Halle Berry could make a paper bag work on the red carpet, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a pain for her to have to change Cannes outfits at the last minute.

According to Reuters, due to the Cannes Film Festival’s new dress code, the outfit Berry originally planned to wear for the May 13 event had to be scrapped. But don’t worry. Berry’s back-up dress was more than chic enough for the carpet.

The new rules for Cannes prohibit nudity and “voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater.” Guests who do not follow these rules may be denied entrance by guards.

This, apparently, was the problem with Berry’s original ensemble. “I had an amazing dress by [Guarav] Gupta to wear tonight, and I cannot wear it because the train’s too big,” Berry said at the news conference, per Reuters. “I had to make a pivot. But the nudity part I do think is probably also a good rule.” Though perhaps bad news for the free-nipple red-carpet trend. On the bright side, the rules now explicitly allow for women to wear flat shoes, so, feminism! Or something.
