Anna Wintour is making some changes at American Vogue that should give the fashion industry icon more time to excel in her global roles.
As reported by Women’s Wear Daily and other fashion-focused outlets, Wintour, who has served as Vogue’s editor-in-chief since 1988, announced on Thursday (June 26) that the publication will be hiring a Head of Editorial Content.
Take a closer look at what this means below.
Is Anna Wintour leaving Vogue?
To be clear, Wintour is not leaving Vogue at large, nor is she exiting the larger Condé Nast fold.
Instead, she’s set to continue forward in her roles as Chief Content Officer for Condé Nast and Global Editorial Director of Vogue. As Business of Fashion and others have since pointed out, the Head of Editorial Content role effectively takes the place of Wintour’s former U.S.-focused title.
What’s next for Vogue after the Anna Wintour announcement?
Head of Editorial Content is already a title held by staffers at other iterations of Vogue, including in France and Japan, among others. The title itself stems from a previous editorial structure overhaul of Condé Nast teams from around the globe. Every Head of Editorial Content answers to their respective Global Editorial Director, a title Wintour will retain at Vogue.
As of this writing, Wintour hasn’t publicly addressed the announcement.
Back in 2018, Bob Sauerberg, Condé Nast’s then-CEO, spoke out against social media rumors of a full-fledged Wintour exit.
“Anna Wintour is an incredibly talented and creative leader whose influence is beyond measure,” Sauerberg said at the time. “She is integral to the future of our company’s transformation and has agreed to work with me indefinitely in her role as [Vogue’s] editor-in-chief and artistic director of Condé Nast.”
Vogue’s May 2025 masthead lists Wintour at the top as, simply, Global Editorial Director. Her Chief Content Officer role, meanwhile, sees her overseeing Condé Nast brands worldwide, sans The New Yorker. Publications that fall under Wintour’s purview include GQ, Vanity Fair, Bon Appétit and more.
