The nation wants to know: Who explained the JD Vance couch joke to Governor Tim Walz? His daughter, Hope, perhaps? Because it was by far the best dad joke I’ve ever heard in an election cycle.

In case you missed it, during his first speech as a VP candidate in Philadelphia, Walz cracked, “I gotta tell ya, I can’t wait to debate the guy [Vance].” Pause for effect. “That is if he’s willing to get off the couch and show up!” This appeared to be a sly reference to the online joke that Vance once had sex with a couch. (He didn’t, as far as we know.)

But is America’s dad really online enough to know about the couch thing? Maybe he learned about it from his actual daughter, Hope.

In a video shared on TikTok, a reporter actually asked Hope—who was wearing the Chappell Roan–inspired Harris-Walz hat—if she was the one to tell her dad the couch joke. Notably, Hope doesn’t confirm or deny; she just makes a zipped-lip motion and waves away the question.

I mean, it wouldn’t be the first time Tim Walz took his daughter’s advice on something. When describing his evolved stance on gun control, Walz told the Star Tribune that after the school shooting at Parkland in 2018, his daughter asked him to do something about it. “Hope woke up like many of you did five weeks ago and said, ‘Dad, you’re the only person I know who is in elected office. You need to stop what’s happening with this.’ I’ll take my kick in the butt from the NRA. I spent 25 years in the Army and I hunt, and I gave [the NRA] the money back,” he said.

Hope Walz may not convince her dad to go vegetarian anytime soon, but I fully believe she could have influenced the couch joke.
