Tyla on the Power of Her Signature Eyebrow Slit

The eyebrow slit, which has roots in ’90s hip-hop culture, has been adopted by a surge of celebrities throughout the 2020s. But while it feels like an edgy phase for some, Tyla identifies her hers as a integral piece of her brand. Beyond the Tyla eyebrow slit, the “Water” singer leans on hairstyles to ground herself through beauty: “I feel the most Tyla when I’m in a protective style, or my natural hair,” she told Glamour.

While Tyla’s Rapunzel cornrows and micro braids have become signature looks, she also uses her hairstyles to push herself and experiment. “When I really want to play and feel like a character, that’s when I pull out the lace front,” she said. A quick scroll through her Instagram is a testament to her range: In just the last few months, she’s rocked curls down her back and cropped close to her head, shades from platinum to jet black, and swoon-worthy braid patterns.

Tyla is also a frequent inspiration source for Y2K style enthusiasts, and her beauty often fits the bill. After all, nothing goes better with bejeweled low-rise jeans, mini-dresses, and fur accents than a juicy gloss, metallic eyeshadow, and a pop of cool pink blush. She also shared that she’s not afraid to take matters into her own hands with a style DIY: she’ll stretch a skirt into a top just as quickly as she’ll make a razor materialize to touch up her eyebrow.

In short, when it comes to beauty, style, and her skyrocketing career, you can count on Tyla to “just make it happen.”
