Carrie Bradshaw’s hat is not what I thought I’d be writing about from the And Just Like That season 3 premiere, but here we are. When coupled with Blake Lively’s umbrella-size black-and-white sunhat in Another Simple Favor, it’s clear that over-the-top headgear is the look of the summer. And I’m here for it.
When I bring it up to And Just Like That… creator Michael Patrick King, he jokes that Carrie’s look isn’t really a hat, but more like “the Hindenburg balloon that landed on her head when she was eating sherbet, and she just decided to go with it, somehow oddly matching her costume.” Nonetheless, “It is amazing,” he adds.
If anything, the look is straight out of Strawberry Shortcake’s pink and red pillowy bonnet from the 1980s, when Muriel Fahrion first created the look for American Greetings. See?

“We call this the first shot across the bow, where social media goes, “What the…oh, why not?” King says.
It’s so absurd that I actually can’t get enough of the checkered brown and khaki hat, especially when paired with the Ossie Clark dress. Sarah Jessica Parker herself agrees.
“I saw that hat, and I wanted it on my head immediately,” SJP tells Glamour. “My feeling is, when I see something like that, Who wouldn’t want that on their head? And can’t we find a reason for it? Sometimes you have to project a need where it doesn’t exist. She’s walking through Washington Square Park eating ice cream in an Ossie Clark dress and Dr. Scholl’s…and it didn’t seem that it would intrude in any way on the scene or even in fact be a thing. You could have told me that hat was three by four. I would’ve felt the same.”
