When I first saw this deal, I couldn’t quite believe it. For as long as I can remember, the North Face Nuptse Jacket has been, at over $300, a purchase as painful as it is practical. But there I was this morning, scoping out the Mr Porter’s Black Friday deals, when suddenly I saw it: The North Face Nuptse, 40% off, down to $198 from the usual $330.
I’ve owned my Nuptse for five years, ever since I first paid above-retail price to a Moscow-based Grailed seller for it, during a winter where the jacket had entirely sold out across New York and the North Face’s website. (I refused to compromise and consider any other style.) What I got in that strangely wrapped package was a bafflingly warm, light, and flattering jacket, which honestly doesn’t look that different today to the first day I got it.
That warmth comes from the jacket’s incredible 700-fill-power down, which is toasty enough that on many winter days, it’s all you need to throw over a T-shirt. The flattering looks come from its cool shorter length which, yes, can leave your thighs exposed, but that’s not really a problem if you wear warm trousers, or long johns under your jeans like me. (Even in jeans alone, I find that as long as my vital organs are warm, the rest of my body manages fine.)
I’ve cleared out my closet multiple times over the years, and keeping the Nuptse is the quickest decision I make every time. I’m not alone in this: As part of my work interviewing and tracking stylish guys’ wardrobes, the Nuptse is never far from view. Typically, the most desirable colorway amongst these folks is the Black, which just so happens to be one of the colorways on such a deep discount. Again, I’m not really sure what’s going on.
