As a dutiful beauty editor (and born-and-raised California girl), my number one priority in my skin care routine is sunscreen, so when I came across the Caliray Lipguard SPF 31 Lip Gloss Balm, I couldn’t wait to try it. I won’t leave home without applying face sunscreen, and my love language has become asking friends and family, “Did you put sunscreen on?” That being said, I’ve tried more SPFs than I can count, from mineral sunscreens to body sunscreens and pretty much everything in between. Plus, I’m a lip-gloss fan through and through—if you open up any of my bags right now, I guarantee you’d find at least two lip glosses or lip balms in each of them.
The skin on our lips is thin and sensitive, more so than the rest of the skin on our bodies. This means it’s easier than you think for our lips to get dried out (hello, chapped lips) or sunburned. So wearing lip sunscreen is a must for me. But amongst a sea of lip glosses and sunscreens, what makes the Caliray Lipguard SPF 31 Lip Gloss Balm the one I love most? First of all, what sets it apart is that it’s truly makeup. It delivers even, pigmented color (nude pink shade San O is my go-to), high-impact shine, subtle plumping, and is a hydrating lip gloss first and foremost.
In terms of wear, it’s lip gloss first, sunscreen second—a.k.a., even with such effective sun protection, it feels and acts just like makeup. This means it’s non-sticky, non-chalky, and non-goopy, and trust me, based on others I’ve tried, many lip sunscreens can’t say the same. Let me put it this way: If the brand didn’t say there is sunscreen in this lip gloss, I would have never known. Bonus: It also tastes amazing (again, not all lip sunscreens can say that) thanks to a fresh fruity mango flavor.
Finding a lip gloss, not just a lip balm, that doubles as sun protection has, frankly, not been the easiest to come by for me. There are some others on the market, with more seeming to pop up lately (the sunscreen-ification of beauty lately is so real), especially as we’re heading into the summer months. But I’ve found them to be sticky or have an off taste. Also, there are just some days I just want more than a lip balm—I still want to do a full face of glam even if I know I’ll be getting some sun exposure. If you’re a makeup lover like myself, you want to be able to wear a full face of makeup and still get that sun protection, and this product absolutely does the trick.
