But don’t be fooled: Though the mattress offers an outstanding enveloping sensation when you lie down, that doesn’t mean you’re forgoing support. Our tester found that the mattress was still supremely comfortable, and offered a great deal of back support. It’s also endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association for its “premium features.” And at 16 inches high, the Midnight Elite is one of the tallest mattresses we’ve tested, which makes it feel extra plush.

One admin note: The Midnight Elite ships in two boxes, and they aren’t light by any means (104 pounds and 68 pounds). We suggest opting for Helix’s in-home set-up if you live in an eligible zip code. All in all, we think this mattress is a solid option for many people. As with any bed, it won’t be ideal for everyone—especially stomach sleepers, in this case—but it’s a great choice for many.

Best Luxury Mattress for Back Pain: Saatva RX

Saatva

Saatva Rx Mattress

Pros

  • Excellent contouring for athletes with joint pain
  • Targeted lumbar support
  • Breathable materials to help regulate body temperature
  • Free white glove delivery and lifetime warranty

Cons

  • May be too soft for sleepers over 300 pounds
  • One of the most expensive mattresses we tested
  • You may feel your partner moving around since it’s so responsive

The Saatva RX is one of few mattresses designed to address “chronic back and joint conditions,” according to Saatva—and it has an endorsement from the American Chiropractic Association to show for it. The mattress’s medium-firm sensation and therapeutic support core, a specially designed combination of foam and coils, offer a promising option for those affected by chronic pain.

Our Tester’s Take

Saatva is one of the best mattress brands we’ve tested—and one that I’ve had the pleasure of having delivered to my home. Saatva’s delivery is exceptional, so the luxury experience of this mattress begins when the delivery folks arrive at your door. Saatva works with a delivery network of local partners, who bring the unfurled mattress into your home and place it straight onto your bed frame, meaning it doesn’t need any time to breathe or off-gas (AKA release sometimes smelly, but harmless, chemicals that are leftover from manufacturing), and you never break a sweat. They will also remove your old mattress free of charge if you select that option at checkout. This is a major perk, as mattress recycling can cost anywhere from $10 to $70, depending on your locale, and you’re also usually responsible for transporting the mattress to the facility. In the end, having someone else pick it up for you removes a lot of headache.

Once atop your bed frame, this mattress strikes a balance between cushion and comfort, according to our tester. In testing, we found that the mattress was supremely comfortable and offered more than expected edge support—lying on the edge of the mattress was no problem for the Saatva RX. In our assessment, it’s truly medium firm, which is ideal for those with back pain.

Plus, in our testing the mattress provided ample support for folks of all sizes, regardless of their sleep position. “The memory foam and innerspring coils were seriously like a hug when I laid down on it,” our tester previously reported to GQ. However, people over 230 pounds who prefer to sleep on their side or stomach may feel some pressure points, or that the mattress is a little too soft for comfort, respectively. This is likely because these folks will sink into the mattress more than others do, making the springs and base more noticeable. In addition, our tester found that the mattress hit a happy medium between allowing them to sink in while lying down and keeping their spine in alignment. Though their hips sank a bit lower than their shoulders, they still felt it did a good job keeping their spine in a neutral position overall.

Nectar

Nectar Luxe Memory Foam Mattress

Pros

  • True memory foam sensation
  • A tall layer of uppermost, pressure-relieving foam
  • Comfortable for back and side sleepers over 130 pounds
  • Taller overall profile for memory a foam option

Cons

  • People weighing less than 130 pounds may feel “on top” of the mattress
  • Mediocre edge support
  • Not supportive enough for stomach sleepers

For those seeking the feeling of cushioned, body-morphing memory foam, the Nectar Luxe Memory Foam Mattress may fit the bill. This mattress offers Nectar’s thickest uppermost foam layer for maximal pressure relief and cradling sensation overnight.

Our Tester’s Take

Our tester found that this mattress captured the sensation most folks seeking memory foam want—a slow-moving, cushioned cradle. Fortunately, it doesn’t fall subject to one of the biggest, and literal, pitfalls with memory foam mattresses: difficulty changing positions at night. Our tester found that though it was responsive to their body and it was still easy to switch sleeping positions.
