Spoilers for Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen’s ending ahead.

In 2026, it’s rare that a supernatural thriller is truly unpredictable. But that’s how it feels watching Netflix’s Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, a new eight-episode series created by Haley Z. Boston and executive produced by the Duffer brothers (of Stranger Things fame).

The show stars Camila Morrone as Rachel Harkin, a moody stoner chick who falls for her golden retriever fiancé Nicky Cunningham (Adam DiMarco) despite their differences. The series opens with Nicky and Rachel driving to his family’s vacation home in upstate New York, where they plan to have a small, intimate wedding. In the days leading up to the wedding, however, Rachel discovers that her bloodline has been cursed. Every member of the Harkin family who chooses to get married must wed their soulmate before sunset on their wedding day. If their partner is not their soulmate, they suffer a horrific death by hemorrhage. The problem? There’s no way to guarantee that their betrothed is actually their soulmate.

As the clock counts down to Rachel and Nicky’s wedding, which is being micromanaged by Nicky’s sister Portia (Gus Birney), the Cunningham family reveals a few secrets of their own. Turns out, Nicky’s parents, Victoria (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and Boris (Ted Levine), don’t have quite the fairytale marriage Nicky believed they did. The twisty story that unfolds next is a rare example of a “thriller” that has earned its classification.

Once you’ve finished all eight episodes, keep reading for a complete breakdown of every shocking twist and turn in the soon-to-be classic limited series.

What really happened when Nicky and Rachel first met?

During the rehearsal dinner, Rachel tells the story of how she and Nicky first met over and over again to each of Nicky’s curious relatives. Upon the umpteenth retelling, Jules (Jeff Wilbusch)—who witnessed the gory death of Rachel’s mother (Victoria Pedretti) as a little boy, and therefore wholeheartedly believes in the curse—begins poking holes in the story. Rachel had been leaning on her and Nicky’s meet-cute as proof that they were soulmates, however, the inconsistencies Jules unearths shake her confidence.

Here’s what really went down. In the moments before Rachel is supposed to board a flight taking off from Austin, Texas, she gets a feeling that “something bad is going to happen” to the plane. Nicky, who had been dumped by his ex the day before, is also at the airport and contemplating whether or not to board his own flight to California for his brother’s wedding amid his heartbreak. As the gate agent stares Rachel down, calling her name over the intercom as she issues the “final boarding” warning, Rachel spies Nicky. She says she feels sad that this “cute” boy will perish along with everyone else on her plane—unaware that Nicky wasn’t actually on the flight.
