I’m not a fan of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. I just happen to have a job that involves shopping, so by default, I have to cover these deals. As a professional, here’s how I recommend spending money: treat yourself to something nice once or twice a year, like a little luxury gift that you so deserve. This year, one of my treats was a RRL trucker jacket I paid $150 for. Beyond that, do I need a Nespresso or an air fryer? Not really. And no made up holiday can convince me otherwise.

But what can convince me is travel deals. And Skyscanner’s are so good, I realized sometimes not buying material items is actually better.

Shop Skyscanner’s Best Deals So Far

Case in point: Last year, my mom and my brother—two of the most sale-shopping-obsessed people I know—didn’t buy anything on Black Friday. Instead, they booked a last-minute flight to Tokyo and took a week-long vacation in March of this 2023. My brother works in politics and hadn’t taken a proper vacation in forever, while my mom had just quit her job after 15 years. They’d wanted to do a just them trip for a while, and instead of heading to some Florida beach, my brother suggested Tokyo on a whim.

Long story short, they both agree it was the best trip they’ve ever taken. My brother saved around $500 on both flights, and they still flew Delta.

Even if you need to buy another jacket on sale or the mattress of your dreams, maybe making some unforgettable memories is also top of the list. My mom will always remember that trip with her second-favorite son—and that’s what a good deal should encourage.
