Robert Downey Jr. promised Chris Evans a gift, and he delivered.
During the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday (March 15), the Marvel Cinematic Universe stars introduced the nominations for Best Adapted and Original Screenplay. Downey and Evans’ appearances also serve as a reunion before Avengers: Doomsday is slated to release on December 18th. To mark the fourteenth anniversary of The Avengers, Evans told the Oscar winner that he got him a copy of the film’s original script signed by the cast.
After both awarded One Battle After Another director Paul Thomas Anderson received the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, Downey briefly walked offstage, which caught Evans off-guard. But he’d eventually return with a metallic thong, claiming that the undergarment was first worn by Channing Tatum in 2012 movie Magic Mike. From the crowd, Tatum shouted that he wanted the thong returned “for work later.”
Tonight’s Oscars have been filled with other gags so far, including a sequence with multiple AI-generated versions of Michael B. Jordan seated in the audience to a few trolling Timothée Chalamet about his comments on ballet and opera.
In Avengers: Doomsday, Evans will return as Captain America, while Downey, who formerly played Iron Man, will be suited as Doctor Doom for the first time. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the movie will mark the thirty-ninth installment of the MCU.
