Legendary MLB pitcher Randy Johnson is a bonafide sneakerhead, and his model of choice is the Nike SB Dunk.
During a recent sitdown with Got Soles, the baseball Hall of Famer showed off his impressive collection of Nike SB Dunks. During the interview, Johnson sat at a table with his pairs of the ultra-rare Nike SB Low “What The Dunk,””Freddy Krueger,” and “Pushead” colorways on display while talking about sneakers.
At one point, Johnson admitted he had no idea how much money he had spent on his collection of kicks. He says that he’s paid more attention to the hobby aspect, noting he’s a collector and not a reseller.
“I have no idea,” said Johnson about how much he’s spent. “To me I don’t look at collecting that way because I collect a lot of different things and they’re fun to me. Things that I enjoy. So I don’t look at, you know, do I know what I spent on a lot of the shoes back then? Yeah, but not everything. Because to me, buying it at that time was the hardest thing, coming about getting a pair of ‘What The Dunks’ or the ‘Freddys.'”
He continued, “More importantly, I wear a size 13, so I got small feet considering I’m 6-foot-10. To be able to find a shoe that I could actually wear if I chose to wear it was pretty cool too. A lot of the shoes I bought, as you’ve noticed, I’ve never worn. The ones that I gave you. That doesn’t mean that I don’t have, you know, doubles, triples, and quadruples of these shoes that I am, A.) holding on to or B.) you know that I have worn maybe once or twice.”
When asked if there was another pair of “Freddy Krueger” Dunks in his closet, Johnson said, “There could be.” The shoe never released to the public, and have sold for prices deep into the five-figure range.
He also spoke on people being surprised to learn that he’s a big collector of Nike Dunks, saying that the collector industry is a bigger market than people realize. He’s got a point. Last year, Danielle Fishel, the actress best known for playing Topanga Lawrence in the 1990s TV sitcom Boy Meets World, also shocked fans by revealing her huge sneaker collection.
