All eyes were on Luigi Mangione yesterday as he was transported from Pennsylvania to New York City via helicopter after being accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson earlier this month.
In the photos from Mangione’s highly publicized perp walk on Thursday, he is flanked by more than a dozen NYPD officers. One officer in particular caught the attention of the internet because of the coveted Off-White x Air Jordan 5 sneakers on his feet. Complex employee Brendan Dunne noted the shoes in a widely shared post on X that kickstarted online conversation around the sneakers, which are tied tight and have red laces swapped in.
Designed by the late Off-White founder Virgil Abloh, this collaborative version of the Jordan 5 was released in February 2020, coinciding with the NBA All-Star Weekend in Chicago. This Off-White x Air Jordan 5 collab currently resells for over $700 on the secondary marketplace, including StockX.
Luigi Mangione is currently facing numerous charges, including the second-degree murder of Thompson. Other charges include carrying a gun without a license, forgery, providing false identification to law enforcement, and possessing an instrument of crime, as well as first-degree murder in furtherance of an act of terrorism. Mangione is being held in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn as he awaits trial.
