Meet Kyra Brummage, the Entrepreneurship Major Styling Stars in Between Classes

Who is your personal style icon?

Kyra Brummage: Right now, it has to be Lily-Rose Depp. Most likely because I adore the work that she’s doing with her stylist, Spencer Singer. I’m gagged every time I see these looks. She looks so chic, so elegant, so herself, and so comfortable in her looks.

How would you describe your personal style in three words?

Confident. That’s a priority for me. I always need to be feeling confident when I step out. And playful. I like to incorporate comfort colors, all sorts of things into my looks. And most importantly, eccentric. I love feeling bold and confident. I love getting weird looks, getting a little like, “Why are you wearing that?” Those types of looks. It makes me feel good, and it makes me feel like I did something right.

What would your dream internship be?

Nicola Formichetti [when he’s] styling Lady Gaga is definitely my number one. There are so many other stylists that are killing it in the game right now, especially some of the newer, younger faces. Jared Ellner, that would be another huge internship opportunity for me. I love how he’s shaping the industry from such a young age. But I feel like working for Gaga would be where my heart lies. I saw Gaga for the first time this year, and I was crying for the first 45 minutes watching her performance because it’s so apparent how much she loves her career. I was floored by her performance. I took it as, I want to be doing something with my life that I love as much as this woman loves performing. Her stylist, Nicola, is also so beyond talented. So to work with them would be a dream for me.

Before you graduate, what skill do you hope to develop?

Definitely sewing. I need to be capable of doing a basic stitch in the instances where I need to alter something. I can do a little something, something. I took a very basic home economics class growing up, and my mom has a beautiful sewing kit. But I just invested in my first sewing machine, so more to come on the sewing.

Who is your all-time favorite designer?

One of my favorite designers right now, I would say, is Erik Charlotte. Everyone needs to go check out her work immediately because what she’s doing is so important and game-changing. She just dressed Conan Gray for the VMAs, and she’s a young designer in the industry who has been doing everything herself until she started getting recognition. Now she’s soaring with opportunity and work, and her looks are so eclectic and forward. No one else is doing the types of design that she’s taking on.

What’s the single most favorite piece in your closet?

One of my most favorite pieces, which I’m looking to debut soon, is this vintage pink leopard printed dress that I recently thrifted at Ciao Cherub in Venice on Abbot Kinney. It’s such a hidden gem of a thrift store, and they have so many good pieces. I swear 90% of my closet, other than my basics, are all thrifted. And this piece is just so mermaid, so pink, it has leopard, and lace detailing. I really think it’s me in a dress, so I’m excited to wear her.
