Colombian-American artist Michael Mejia has reportedly gotten into a car accident not long after revealing his intention to sell the custom 2022 Lamborghini Urus he won from Shakira in a giveaway.

As shown in a video shared on Instagram by the account ¡Siéntese Quien Pueda!, a Spanish reality series, the purple Lambo was seen damaged in Miami. The photos appeared to show Mejia behind the wheel and talking with authorities about the vehicle, which had a major dent in its side. It’s unclear if he sustained any injuries in the crash, but he hasn’t updated his socials with any news.

“Michael Mejia, the lucky winner of #Shakira ‘s customized Lamborghini Urus, valued at $280,000, has been involved in a traffic accident with the luxurious vehicle,” reads the caption of the post. “Although details of the incident are still scarce, it has been confirmed that Mejia was unharmed. The Lamborghini Urus, known for its distinctive purple color and exclusive design, was delivered to Mejia in December 2024 after winning the contest organized by the singer. We will continue to report as more details about this unexpected event become known.”

In an interview with Univision’s El Gordo y la Flaca last month, Mejia spoke about winning the car from Shakira and revealed that he hopes to sell it for $1 million because of the high costs of maintenance. He was gifted an additional $90,000 from Shakira to cover expenses such as taxes, the car’s title transfer, various legal costs, and six months of insurance payments.

“I didn’t expect car insurance to cost $2,000 a month, and that’s how much it is. With the money she gave me, the car will be sustained for a while but it’s still very expensive to maintain,” he said. “Someone offered me, believe it or not, between 700 and 800,000 dollars. That’s wonderful, but a lot of people are telling me ‘Don’t sell it for less than one [million].’”

When Shakira announced the giveaway, she said the purple Lambo was “a gift to myself as I began my single life,” but she later came to understand that “material things” aren’t as important as “the people we love and the connections we build.”
