It’s been well documented that LeBron James idolized Michael Jordan growing up in Akron, Ohio. So much so that the King wore the number 23 as a nod to Jordan. And while this led many fans to believe that he originally signed with Nike to follow in MJ’s footsteps, James set the record straight on why he really became a Swoosh athlete.
On the latest episode of The Pat McAfee Show, James joined host Pat McAfee for an hour-long conversation. The topics ranged from discussions about his current Los Angeles Lakers squad, to his days with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat, to his relationship with MJ. While breaking down his admiration for Jordan, James confirmed that played no part in him signing with Nike.
“I signed with Nike because I got a hell of a signing bonus, and they gave me a seven-year, $90 million contract,” James said. “And I moved my mom out of the hood the next day I signed that contract.”
James also confirmed that the brand’s diverse footwear range helped with his decision to join Nike, stating that he wants to wear Air Maxes, Pennys, Jordans, Bo Jacksons, and others.
