Kate Middleton’s latest family portrait has gone in a new direction—literally and figuratively.

On June 16, the official Instagram account for the Prince and Princess of Wales shared the latest family portrait taken by the princess, and everything about it feels a bit more casual than previous posts. First things first, the group of four—Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—face away from the camera on an empty beach, overlooking the waves in particularly comfortable attire. Most notably, Prince William joins his children in a pair of green shorts, a hoodie, and a baseball cap.

Then there’s the caption. The photo itself was shared in honor of the Father’s Day, which is celebrated on the third Sunday of every June. “We love you, Papa. Happy Father’s Day 💕,” read the caption, which was signed “G, C, & L” for George, Charlotte, and Louis.

From the pink heart emojis to the relaxed attire, the lovely family moment would not be out of place on any mother of three’s Instagram account, as opposed to literal royalty. Just last year’s Father’s Day portrait, which was not shot by Kate Middleton, featured the same group in more buttoned-up looks and a simple “Happy Father’s Day” message.

So far, 2024 has been a trying year for the royal family, as Kate Middleton and King Charles continue to undergo treatment for cancer. On June 15, Middleton joined her family for her first public appearance since announcing her diagnosis in March, prefacing her attendance at the King’s Birthday Parade, also known as Trooping the Colour, with an update on her health and a personal message to her supporters on Instagram.

“I have been blown away by all the kind messages of support and encouragement over the last couple of months,” she wrote on June 14. “It really has made the world of difference to William and me and has helped us both through some of the harder times.”
