Happy birthday Princess Kate! And happy new-royal-portrait-day to the rest of us. In honor of Kate Middleton’s 43rd birthday on January 9, Prince William shared a new, black-and-white portrait of the Princess of Wales on the couple’s official Instagram, with a sweet message in the caption.
The photo, taken by Matt Porteous in Windsor last summer according to People, shows the princess looking very casual indeed. She wears a white button-down shirt tucked into jeans and her hands tucked into her pockets. She topped the shirt with a blazer, sleeves rolled up, and a checked scarf, while her perfectly blown-out hair rested over her shoulders. (See the photo here.)
In his heartfelt caption, William wrote, “To the most incredible wife and mother. The strength you’ve shown over the last year has been remarkable. George, Charlotte, Louis and I are so proud of you. Happy Birthday, Catherine. We love you. W.”
Kate Middleton has only recently returned to public life after taking an extended hiatus to treat cancer. In March of 2024, the princess revealed in a video that she had begun a course of preventative chemotherapy to treat cancer, which explained why she hadn’t been seen in public in months. “I’m getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal in my mind, body, and spirits,” she said.
In September, the princess released another video, with a statement explaining that after nine months, she had completed the chemotherapy. “The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown,” she said.
Since then, Princess Kate has made a return to her public duties, including attending Christmas services with her entire family on December 25.
