For months now we have seen NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown wearing a mystery sneaker during offseason training, at Rucker Park in NYC, and now at Boston Celtics media day.

Finally, we have an answer as to what they are. Brown is going out on his own, launching his debut performance brand, 741.

According to Brown’s team, he has turned down over $50 million in endorsement deals from other major sneaker companies to pursue full ownership and creative control of his own brand.

“The understanding of ownership and value is what’s important for the next generation of athletes,” Brown says. “It’s time to think different and be different … create new ideas. It’s time to create more value for everyone involved, from athletes to consumers to employees and the communities that support them.”

In recent years, Brown has used his footwear to call out the many issues that he has with Nike. He expressed displeasure with the brand’s handling of the Kyrie Irving situation and tweeted “Since when did Nike care about ethics?” Brown continued to play in Nike sneakers, but would cover up the Swooshes with images like Tommie Smith and John Carlos raising their fists in the air during the 1968 Olympics, words like “Liberation” and “By Any Means Necessary,” and more.

Accessibility is a focal point for Brown and the 741 brand, stating that the cost of his sneaker in big kids sizes will be 40% or more below competitors.

The name “741” itself comes with a deep personal connection, stating that the number 7, 4, and 1 have appeared frequently in his life and represent spiritual awakening, hard work, and new beginnings. “741 is more than just a sneaker brand—it’s a statement about independence, creativity, and ownership,” Brown says.

Finally, Brown looked to one of his heroes, Kobe Bryant for inspiration. Brown says he was deeply moved by Bryant’s vision of launching his own sneaker brand before his passing. “Kobe’s journey taught me about being fearless and pushing sports, along with society, to new heights. That’s the mindset I’m bringing to 741.”

Brown’s 741 sneaker will be available for preorder soon, with the official release date taking place on October 22 online and at select retailers.
