The seasons are finally changing. Before we tuck the jackets completely away, there’s still going to be some chilly days on the calendar. That means your outfits need to be ready for the cooler and warmer temperatures at the same time. But that isn’t always as easy as you may think, especially when you want to make it look good. There’s a bit of a science to layering. So we asked a professional.
Raised in Anaheim, California, Toreno Winn has been in the industry for nearly a decade. The 32-year-old has styled well-dressed NBA players like Kyle Kuzma and creative directed campaigns for Nike. Winn also recently stopped by the Complex offices in Los Angeles to help us style some of the key pieces available now to shop on Complex and gave us some pointers along the way.
From the right color palette to proper fabrics, here are Five Tips for Layering, According to a Professional Stylist.
Toreno says: Today, I’m wearing a track jacket. It’s light enough to wear all day and not be fully exposed if I don’t want to, but I can also zip these sleeves off if I get too hot. I really like some type of functionality and versatility in all of my pieces.
Toreno says: People need to tell more stories with color and fabric. Whether you like patterns or different types of fabrics, they move differently with you as you move. Movement is super key when you’re picking clothing. If you’re doing light layers, it’s mostly based on your environment. If it’s mad hot outside, you’re going to wear lighter colors. Whites bounce color. The darker colors absorb more light. That makes it hotter for you.
Toreno says: Some things look really good on the rack and terrible on body, and vice versa. I think rack appeal is what gets a lot of people. When it’s hung up or it’s laid flat, it looks amazing. But when it gets on body, it’s not always good.
Toreno says: The thing that people ask me more than anything is, ”How do I elevate my pants?” Most people have short legs. Nine times out of 10, they’re still longer than your torso. Start with your pants [when building an outfit]. If your pants suck, your outfit is going to suck. You can also pick very light layers that are asymmetrical, so you can tell different stories with your silhouette.
Toreno says: Styling yourself is about making yourself feel good. Pick things that portray your mood and vibe versus trying to appeal to other people. I think that’s like the number one mistake people make.
