The fashion world is catching on to what so many of us have known all along: Uniqlo’s Colorful Socks are almost undeniably the best socks on the market. We’ve often said as much! But the latest Lyst Index — a periodic popularity vote ranking the 10 “hottest products”, collated by the global e-tailer Lyst — has included Uniqlo’s Colorful Socks, sharing space with runway luminaries like Celine, miu miu, and Saint Laurent. Not that Uniqlo’s socks needed the affirmation, but it’s nice to see even fashion obsessives catching on to what millions have understood for years: Uniqlo socks >>> all other socks.
As with everything Uniqlo, the allure comes from combining stellar quality with “Wait, is that right?” prices. You can buy Uniqlo Colorful Socks as loosies for $3.90, but four pairs will run you only $12.90 (saving you $2.70 — so you’re getting most of a pair for free). You might think you don’t need that many more socks, but have you put on a fresh pair mid-day, just because? Or found yourself packing bonus “in case” socks while traveling? Wishing you had just the right shade of blue? Uniqlo understands.
Here’s where I make a confession: I own an embarrassing array of supposedly fancy socks. My favorites come from brands like Anonymous Ism, Front General Store, and Corgi, and regularly cost $20 or more for just a single pair. But I’d be lying if I said wearing Uniqlo socks feels like a notable downgrade from any of the above. They’re soft, they stay up, they last through lots of washes, the ribbing means they can hold down a suit if need be, and there are more colors to choose from (51) than your local nail salon.
Granted, saying that “Uniqlo Socks Are Good, Actually” isn’t breaking news. Pointing out that any Uniqlo staple punches far above its weight is like pointing out that the sky is blue. But it’s easy to forget how good Uniqlo’s Ribbed Socks really are, especially when a single pair costs less than a McDouble.
If there’s anything actionable here, it’s that a quick assessment of your sock drawer is probably in order. If you’re maxed out on Uniqlo’s Colorful style, I also highly recommend the brand’s Striped Pile Socks, Pile Half Socks, and Melange Half Socks (which I’ll use for relaxed hiking, since they hold up on the trail as well as anything else). Variety is the spice of life, but Uniqlo’s socks are meat-and-potatoes perfection.
