Trends change, but the truly stylish stick to their looks. You’d never confuse, say, a Kate Winslet outfit with a Courtney Love ensemble. That’s okay. Dress like yourself. Emily Blunt, for instance, is simply not the type for lots of sheer fabric or revealing “naked” styles, even though that’s what happens to be in right now, so at the German premiere of her new film The Smashing Machine, she and her stylist worked together to keep the look sexy and flesh-colored without letting any actual extra flesh show.

For the event, Blunt wore the Satin Bra and Sequin Underlay Tulle Gown by David Koma ($3,350), which sadly seems to be sold out everywhere, though similar styles are still in stock. In the photos on the Koma website, it’s clear that the fabric is thin enough to show whatever undergarments the wearer has on, but Ms. Blunt would never be so, well, Blunt on the red carpet. Instead, she or her stylist attached another layer of lining to the skirt or outfitted her in a layer of opaque pantyhose to create a look that’s more optical illusion than peekaboo.
