I feel silly writing this story, honestly. There’s a pretty widespread movement, especially among more environmentally focused companies, against Black Friday. I’ve written stories about the trend: Does Yeti do Black Friday? Does REI do Black Friday? The trend is to offer pre–Black Friday sales, then encourage consumers to spend time outdoors instead of shopping after Thanksgiving. Patagonia, in Yvon Chouinard fashion, takes it a step further. The company actively campaigns against Black Friday and encourages users to shop its Worn Wear selection.
As someone who covers this stuff for a living, I get it. Black Friday brings out the worst tendencies in shoppers. Instead of buying cool menswear on Black Friday, most consumers buy junk that ends up in a landfill. That said, I also understand the other side of the coin. This stuff is expensive, and nobody’s got disposable income these days. We need deals.
As a compromise, before I show the rest of the Patagonia deals, I want to recommend one product only, this jacket. It’s a classic Patagonia cut, but instead of getting done up in petro-fabrics, it’s made of 100 percent organic cotton and woven by hand. The fabric has a good weight to it. The cut is cool, though I would have a tailor crop it an inch higher for a more vintage look, and it’s currently 50 percent off.
Now for the rest of the “deals.” This is everything that’s still available in the Patagonia Web Specials section, as well as REI’s Winter Sale. Not a lot…. Maybe, after all, you shouldn’t buy something this Black Friday. Hold on to that money you wanted to spend on a down jacket and buy a gift for a loved one. Why not try that this year?
