Short-nail fall is still dominating celebrity manicure trends, and Dakota Johnson just tried one of our favorite summer looks on the trending nail shape.
Johnson was honored at the Zurich Film Festival last night wearing a cobalt Gucci princess gown, her latest lesson in sheer dressing. With understated glam, she opted for fresh take on the milk bath nails look to complement her gown’s bold color.

Milk bath nails were heavily trending for spring and summer, but Dakota Johnson proved that they work just as well for fall. The milky manicure—which gives the illusion of a milky bath—has inspired plenty of spin-offs, usually worn with long almond nails. We’ve seen blueberry milk nails, lilac milk nails, strawberry milk nails—the pastel rainbow goes on and on. But Johnson decided to give the look a fall update with the nail trend of the season: short clean nails.
Johnson stayed true to the OG milk-bath-nails look, wearing an almost white shade with pinky nude undertones. If you love a light neutral, but pure white nails feel too stark for everyday, it’s the perfect color. Her short square nail shape is a popular choice this fall, paired with trends like vampy dark manicures and toasted nails.
“Nail shapes are trending shorter and more square, which is interesting because normally, as we transition into fall and winter, nails get longer,” celebrity nail artist Tom Bachik, who created a super-similar milk bath nail for Selena Gomez, told Glamour.
