If there’s one thing I know about Dakota Johnson, it’s that her bangs are more like a fixed appendage than a hairstyle. If there’s a second thing I know about Dakota Johnson, it’s that she prefers classic, tailored pieces, typically in oversized silhouettes.
So when the actor stepped out in New York City on June 2 in a pair of frayed, boot-cut jeans in a wash best described as “smoke,” I was surprised—this is a woman who loves a trouser or a pair of straight-leg jeans, typically in an all-American shade of indigo or vintage blue.

However, upon further reflection (this is my job, after all), I was like, actually? A flare is so Johnson. This is the woman who was basically the poster child for Alessandro Michele’s ’70s-tinged tenure at Gucci, who can rock a pair of amber-lensed sunglasses and a paisley coat without looking like an Elton John impersonator. Plus, the ‘fit had the classic Johnson elements: a leather trench to check the “menswear” box, and a subtly sexy sheer black bodysuit. She finished off the all-black ensemble with a tapered pair of ballet flats in black leather—because when Johnson does femininity, she does it with an edge.
The actor is currently in New York City to promote her latest film, The Materialists, in which she stars as a matchmaker facing an impossible choice: Pedro Pascal, or Chris Evans? The film is from Past Lives writer and director Celine Song, who proved her mastery of romance genre in her debut starring Greta Lee.
At least from the trailers, The Materialists seems to have a lighter tone, more in the vein of romantic comedy. Song herself told EW that the film sits “sits uncomfortably but happily” in the rom-com bucket, while also “pushing against the traditional sense of the genre as it exists.”
“Love and dating, even though those are things that men do as well, there is a dismissive feeling of it being called a chick flick or lighter fare,” she said. “I think there’s nothing more hardcore than this thing that we do, which is love someone. Romance is a very hardcore thing because it’s one of the most dramatic things that everybody gets to do.”
I, for one, can’t wait to convince my boyfriend that we’re going to go see a “hardcore” film in theaters when Materialists premieres on June 13. Stay hardcore, Celine and Dakota!
