My house is filled with endless gadgets. I have a talking trash can, an art TV that changes backgrounds when I walk past it, and a Dyson robot that wanders around looking for dirt. When guests come over, I am constantly fielding questions—What is this? What about that? It does what? But the thing I get queried about the most is my group of night-lights. I first tested this set back in 2022, and despite two years of rotating between new products for testing, they’ve remained. In fact, I’ve bought many more Casper night-lights since my first purchase.

The beauty of the light lies in its seamless, simple design. It’s a pleasing round shape, about two inches in diameter, and you hardly even notice it’s there. I plug one into an outlet, and, mentally, it fades into the background. The sensor makes it even more discreet. During the day, the light never turns on, of course. But at night, when you walk by it, it lights up when you’re just the right distance away. Never too early, never too late. It’s one of those tech successes that works so perfectly you don’t notice. It’s just part of the home. Rather, when it’s not there, you notice.

I have one in every room in my house. In the kitchen, it guides me when I need a little bit of light to grab a glass of water in the middle of the night. I have one in the bathroom, so I don’t get stuck in a dark room or have to turn on the harsh overhead light that makes it impossible for my brain to go back to sleep. I have one in the hallway to help me navigate from the kitchen to the bathroom. Best of all, I have one in my son’s room. I don’t want a constant glow in his room while he’s sleeping, but if he does wake up, I can go in and see him without disturbing either of us.

I never knew I could love something so simple that I write a story about it, but this is really one of my nonnegotiables. Every time we host someone for dinner, they notice the lights that gently illuminate as they walk through the hallway to bathroom, and like clockwork I receive a text message the next day: “Thanks for dinner! What were those night-lights?” So here’s my duty to everyone living without them: Each light is $16 on Amazon—grab a few.
