
‘Tis the season for a warm and fuzzy manicure—at least when it comes to the “cardigan nails” trend. Fashion-inspired designs like sheer-tights nails are having a moment right now, and your coziest sweater might be the best inspiration for your next set.
What are cardigan nails?
Cardigan nails mimic the fuzzy, blended look of a colorful mohair sweater. If you love a maximalist manicure to brighten up the gloomy season, you’re in luck: The most popular cardigan nail looks emulate nostalgic, rainbow-striped winter knits.
How to get the look
To give your nails the cardigan treatment, opt for soft, blurred stripes rather than crisp lines. There are a couple of different methods to get the look, depending on how “fuzzy” of a texture you’re after. “I chose to use thick gel polish paints,” Jade Yang, the nail artist who created the cardigan manicure featured above, tells Glamour. Compared to an airbrush, she says that asking for gel “allows for a more seamless blend between colors, and takes less time to curate.”
Yang starts with two layers of a sheer nude base, then chose six complementary gel colors. “I carefully layer each color one-by-one on the nude base with a sponge and grabber tool,” she says. noting that the gel must be cured between each layer to preserve its vibrancy. “Each color of the sweater nail takes two to four coats, depending on how bold or soft you want each color to be.”
