ASAP Rocky says he’ll “forever love” Michèle Lamy for a multitude of reasons, though he can’t personally “justify” all elements of her aesthetic.
During a recent Joe Budden Podcast Network interview, the Don’t Be Dumb artist, who worked with Lamy on his 2015 album At. Long. Last. ASAP and other projects, was asked whether he feels “hip-hop [is] misunderstanding” her.
This led to Rocky addressing some of the more ridiculous claims made about the longstanding fashion figure in certain circles, whose husband is fashion designer Rick Owens, all while expressing gratitude for what he’s learned from her.
“I can’t justify the dark shit and weird shit she do. … Do she worship the devil? I wouldn’t know because she don’t do none of that shit around me,” Rocky said, as seen in this clip. “But they do have iconography and imagery.”
Budden then interjected with a mention of a recent campaign featuring extensive kissing, presumably this one for Moncler and Rick Owens.
“But they gay,” Rocky responded during the Patreon-exclusive episode. “Rick Owens gay.”
He went on to reiterate his remarks, eventually making sure viewers know just how grateful he is for what he and Lamy have worked on together.
“Bro, we talking about gay Europeans,” he said. “Like, we won’t understand that. But that’s them. I love the fact that I’m comfortable in those rooms. It ain’t no spells being casted when I’m around. I can’t justify. And I ain’t doing no rituals.”
Rocky continued: “She just taught me about art. She took me to Frieze Art [Fair]. She shot my album cover and she gave me a nice diamond ring to do the album cover, the one called At. Long. Last. ASAP. She creative-directed a lot of stuff for me and I’mma forever love that lady. She always showed me love and embraced me and taught me.”
For Don’t Be Dumb, Rocky’s long-awaited Testing follow-up, he turned to Edward Scissorhands filmmaker Tim Burton for the cover art. He also featured Burton in the recently released “Whiskey/Black DeMarco” video, seen below.
