Also notable about the night? This marks Anne Hathaway’s first appearance at the Academy Awards since 2014, though she did attend the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party in 2016 while pregnant with her first child.
The Devil Wears Prada star has a complicated history with the Academy Awards, having earned her first nomination at just 26 years old for her leading role in Rachel Getting Married (2008). Just a few years later, however, her Academy Awards hosting debut alongside James Franco was overwhelmingly panned by viewers, with The Hollywood Reporter calling it “one of the worst Oscar telecasts in history.”
This seemed to kick off a years-long wave of public vitriol towards Hathaway that was so prevalent that it got it’s own nickname, “Hathahate.” (Of course, Franco didn’t receive the same treatment because misogyny.) Despite this negativity, Hathaway went on to win best supporting actress at the Academy Awards in 2013 for her performance as Fantine in Les Misérables.
Hathaway eventually found it in her to joke about the hosting gig despite struggling with the aftermath. Though she didn’t attend the Oscars in 2019, she posted a throwback photo from her time as host on Instagram ahead of the ceremony. “No matter what happens with today’s show, just remember, it’s already been worse,” she wrote. “Happy Oscars!”
