Bluey, the mega-popular kids show about an Australian dog family, is getting the feature treatment. Riding a wave of positive reviews (and an unexpected crossover appeal with childless adults), Disney is giving the go-ahead for a big screen Bluey adventure.
Here’s everything we know.
What is Bluey: The Movie?
It’s a movie of Bluey, made by the people who make the show.
Joe Brumm, the creator of Bluey, said in a statement, “I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on The Sign in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that. I’ve always thought Bluey deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together.”
Brumm will write and direct the feature, which will be computer-animated and star vocal talent from the show including Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack as Bluey’s mum and dad, Chilli and Bandit Heeler.
Bluey comes from Australia but was made available on Disney + starting in January 2020 and has been popular stateside ever since.
When is Bluey: The Movie happening?
The studio is aiming for a 2027 worldwide theatrical release under the Disney banner, and it will live on Disney Plus after that. It’s a co-production between Disney, the BBC and Ludo Studio and will air on ABC iView and ABC Kids in Australia post-theatrical release, per the press release.
Wait, back up: what is Bluey?
It’s an Australian show aimed at kindergarteners about a young dog named Bluey and her dog family and her dog friends.
Wait, Bluey is a girl?
Yes, Bluey is a girl. Just like Blue, the blue girl dog from Blue’s Clues, Bluey is a blue girl dog. Her little sister, Bingo, is also a girl dog, though she is not blue. On Bluey, color does not correspond with gender.
