At this point, we’ve squeezed so much juice out of the Abercrombie polo fruit that the rind is starting to look a little wrinkled. Over the last few months, the mall brand mainstay has mastered the form, churning out fuzzy long-sleeve polos, sexy, barely-there crocheted polos, and a grip of polos festooned with pastoral scenes worthy of a Dutch old master. Well, just when we thought there wasn’t a drop of sweet nectar left, the Moose went ahead and steamrolled our expectations. Behold the latest entrant in the Abercrombie polo canon, a button-less pleated riff it’s calling the Plisse Johnny Collar Sweater Polo.
It’s a mouthful to say and a feast for the eyes, which, by the way, are not deceiving you. You are indeed looking at a shirt from Abercrombie & Fitch and definitely not a certain late, great Japanese designer whose groundbreaking contributions to fashion only begin with his most famous innovation. Yes, the cotton-nylon blend, with its refined pleats and bouncy drape, certainly pays tribute—to put it delicately—to his work, but the price won’t have you triple-checking your budget tracker.
Obvious inspirations aside, the silhouette holds its own. It boasts an extremely sexy button-less placket and short sleeves, all the better to show off the progress you’ve made with your New Years’ resolutions. With five different colors to choose from, you could walk away with the whole set for less than a single polo from another brand that shall not be named. The juice, in other words, is very much worth the squeeze.
